We awoke in the middle of the Redwoods, had a quick cup of tea and set off down the remainder of the Avenue of the Giants, fortunately finding an early coffee stop as I really needed some caffeine this morning. At last the weather was good - blue skies and sun so by mid morning I had actually taken off my leg warmers (the first time for days!). Our route today followed the River Elk upstream through the remainder of the Redwoods and was very picturesque. It was lovely to be rerouted off the main 101 and to follow the old 101 road which was much quieter.
Fortunately the headwind has subsided which made cycling a distance of 48 miles much much easier.
We stopped for lunch and to pick up supplies in Garberville which was full of people who looked like travellers but were actually trimmers (workers who come from all over the world to prune the marijuana plants which are grown in abundance here despite being officially illegal!
We arrived at Standish Hickey State Park late afternoon - a very spacious and well equipped camp, and were soon joined by our fellow cyclists/campers from last night as well as some other cyclists and hikers so quite a full site tonight.
We're having an even earlier night than usual tonight (8pm) as tomorrow we will be tackling the 5 mile difficult climb out of Leggett which leads back to the Pacific Coast. According to popular rumour, abandoned touring bikes line the road and there are graves of cyclists who did not make it along the way! ( Annie and Victoria you know where my will is filed!).
