Day 38 Mendoccino to Manchester State Beach 26 miles

KHaving outwitted the racoons last night by tying all our fastened paniers together to stop them being dragged away into the undergrowth by teams of racoons (yes it's true - it happened to some fellow campers the other night!), we were up and on the road by 8.15am.  At last, a lovely day from the start, crisp and cold early on but soon warm with a slight fret coming off the coast.
Although we only cycled 26 miles, the route was very undulating and we climbed what the book described as the steepest hill of the Pacific Coast.  It must have been true as even Rob had to get off and push at one point.
However it was a wonderful day's cycling with fantastic coastal views.
We stayed at a KOA campsite tonight rather than a state park and, although more expensive, the facilities were much better - hot tub, swimming pool but of real importance as I'm down to my last clean item of clothing, a laundry!  Clean clothes - hurray!
As we arrived early we rode down to the beach before it got dark and watched the waves crashing onto the sand beneath the sinking sun.  Then back to the campsite to a fantastic outdoor communal cooking area (Ready, Steady, Cook here we come!) to have a meal of pasta and gumbo soup - what a combination (groceries are very limited at the local stores).  An interesting chat ensued around the communal campfire with a group of Americans staying here who were intrigued by our trip and couldn't believe the distance we were cycling.  Great atmosphere here tonight as several other hiker/bikers we have met recently are staying here - a certain camaraderie has developed despite our differing ages, nationalities and ultimate destinations.
Forgot to mention - bought a bargain fleecy blanket in the campsite shop for $9.99 - gets cold here at night!
