California sun at last! Yes, yes, yes! Ok it was a very misty start but what a glorious day it turned into! And a very easy 34 miles too with a welcome tailwind pushing us up the gentle 13.5 mile climb into the hills this morning.
We had the choice of 2 campsites the first of which looked lovely - right by the beach, palm trees, sea, sand and (most important for Rob), showers! We set up camp early, and'using wetwipes, cleaned the bikes which were filthy after yesterday's wet weather. After that we actually went into the sea - apparently there hasn't been a shark attack since September - no worries then......
We'd bought pasta and soup to mix together for supper ( one small pan and a €2 frying pan represent the full extent of our cooking equipment). Many of these state park campsites are miles from any shops or restaurants so you need to be prepared and we've now dined several times on pasta and tinned soup. I chatted to a couple of RV owners next to us and managed to acquire 2 bottles of Bud Light - they wouldn't hear of payment - a bit embarrassing t really but the Americans are so friendly.
Later in the afternoon who should turn up at the campsite but Herbie and Laura and also Jackie - so we're all camped up together once again. They use 'warm showers' quite a lot - a recirocal arrangement where you ring up regustered users snd they host you for the night. Sounds good to me but not Rob's 'thing'!
We watched the sun go down on the beach among the palm trees - fantastic - this is what I imagined! But don't get too jealous - by 7pm it was dark, pretty cold and very windy - I'm typing this by torchlight in a woolly hat, jeans, 2 tops and a coat! Off to bed now at 7.30pm to get warm! Night night.
