After a very windy night (thought the tent was going to blow down), unzipped the fly sheet this morning to a view of the beach, sea, palm trees and a cup of tea! Thanks Rob! And it was a first on this trip to have a dry tent.
We swapped email addresses with Herbie and Laura before setting off on US101. Not long though before we were on a lovely cycle path towards Santa Barbara - and it was WARM - short sleeves before 9am! The route took us through the campus of California University which was very impressive - Rob did a great job navigating through all the buildings.
We covered about 10 miles on a fenced cycle path with US101 and the Amtrack railway on our left and the sea on our right - surreal.
Unfortunately, on reaching Ventura and talking to a local cyclist we discovered that the campsite we had planned to stay at was closed due to an estuary flood - what??? So we tracked down tourist info in Ventura to try and find alternative accommodation. There were no more campsites in the vicinity apart from one wanting to charge $60 for one tent (forget it) so we booked into a fairly grotty motel instead. What happened to my occasional 5 star treat, I keep wondering? I'm sure that was I the original travel plan........
