After Rob's disagreement and reluctant compromise (Rob, compromise?) with the reception staff over the bike storage arrangements last night, we were relieved in the morning to find the bikes in the place we had left them the night before - and undamaged.
We set off before 8am as we had a long day ahead and completed the first 15 miles on a very busy road to Laguna Beach to the daily Starbucks Coffee stop (Rob would have shares in Starbucks - if he could afford them!). Whilst I was inside ordering the flat whites, there was a police arrest right outside - 4 police vans arresting the driver of a Mercedes car - no messing about - guns out - get out of the car - real American cop stuff! (I missed it all having been despatched to order the coffees and blueberry scone inside).
We continued through Camp Pembleton, a US military base, for about 20 miles, after having had our passports checked first! Quite a distance on US1 followed but then an interesting diversion on a sandy beach path after advice from a local resident (it's very hard to cycle on sand btw, especially when there are lots of pedestrians!). Eventually (after 66 miles) we arrived at our designated campsite (and last one of the trip). It was very busy but as we pulled into the hiker/biker site we were immediately greeted by the campers next door who gave us 2 bottles of beer and fresh fruit - they are all so interested to hear about our trip and are so generous! Lots of children on this campsite - all having a great time - reminds me of times with Victoria and Annie!
We were both pretty tired but managed to drag ourselves over the road for a delicious Italian meal - courtesy of Rob! as nearly at the end of the cycling now - thanks Rob! Last 25 miles tomorrow - the whole trip's been a bit of a blur - go, go, go........
