We were up early to cycle through LA to catch the 9am train to El Monte where we picked up a 30 mile cycle path alongside a concrete river bed back to the coast. This avoided a very unpleasant part of central LA but did not reduce our cycling mileage at all. We had already seen a lot if homeless and clearky disturbed people in downtown LA - very sad - not sure what help is available to them here.
The 30 miles by the concrete river/drainage chanel were easy ridinf if rather boring after a while but on reaching downtown Long Beach the scenery changed to sheer opulence - lots of boats and upmarket shops and restaurants. This is where I should be staying, I thought to myself! We then cycled along the edge of Long Beach and Huntington Beach - massive beaches with great surfing conditions.
There are no campsites in this region so we cycled a few miles inland to Casa Mesa to a Motel 6 for the night. Both feeling pretty tired, mentally and physically. Thanks to Rob for navigating our way into and out of LA - it can be quite stressful to find the right way in such a big city and to sort out trains when you've got fully loaded bikes to get on and off too. Back to the coast route as per our route plan tomorrow though so hopefully a bit easier.
