After a 5.45am start dismantling the tent in the dark to make the 8 am ferry (why, exactly, when there was a perfectly civilised 11 am ferry?), we arrived at the ferry dock at 7.05 in plenty of time to board the ferry to Anacortes.
It was a beautiful trip although quite cold - nice hot coffee on board though!
The first few miles out of Anacortes were challenging but wonderfully scenic. After 15 miles we pulled into our first American diner of the trip (Jack ' s Place) where we had corn beef hash, over easy eggs and waffles smothered in maple syrup under the watchful eye of Elvis Presley. Delicious!
The rest of the day's ride followed the coast with possibly the best views of the trip so far.
Finally we took another ferry to Port Townsend, intending to camp at Fort Worden state park but,due to the wooden boat festival this weekend, all the hiker biker sites were full so we were redirected to the salubrious Jefferson Fairground site - a bargain at $17 including hot showers! Met up with Bob from Chicago, a lone cyclist also cycling the Pacific Coast route so chatted to him most of the evening.

Looking good so far. Weather brilliant here ... 30°C today here in London. Rob, last night's Roy Harper concert at the Royal Festival Hall was brilliant.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work
