Having enjoyed our last night of luxury in a comfortable bed in the camper van, we said goodbye to Sally, Greg and Sally 's 96 year old mum, JuneBob. Hoping that the last 3 days hadn't softened us up too much, we set off on our bikes, fully loaded once again, down the very scenic Hood Canal section of Puget Sound. Fortunately the predicted heavy rain did not materialise and apart from a few too close for comfort RVs, we arrived at another superb state park with hiker biker sites for only $12.
This inspired us to splash out a further $5 on some wood and kindling in the hope of enjoying our first real fire of the holiday. (We needed something to stare at for the 4 hours between erecting the tent at 4.30pm and getting into our sleeping bags at 8.30pm and had woefully failed to find anything resembling a shop selling beer anywhere along today's route). Rob's boy scout skills were put to the test - he has often boasted of his scout's camping badge which apparently included the rare skill of lighting a fire in the wild by rubbing 2 sticks together!
And what a success - I shall never doubt him again - the fire was fantastic. Our newly laundered clothes stink of smoke but definitely worth it. Very peaceful to stare into the embers of a real fire, especially in a deep wood somewhere in the USA. This is the life!
