Day 9 San Juan Island 35 miles

We woke up this morning to find that we were camped in an idyllic location with a lake on either side and only 3 miles walk to the shower block☺. Despite the fact that we are now safely away from bear country Nicola was worried that something was prowling around the tent in the night but it was actually me visiting the toilet!
So as this island is reputed to be a cyclists paradise we felt compelled to do the 35 mile circular tour. Oh dear it was very hilly even without panniers. However it was well worth the effort. First port of call was Roche Harbour, where we took a late breakfast mingling with the smart yacht set. The cost was such that we were reduced to bread and cheese for our evening meal. Then we visited the English camp. San Juan is the site of the farcical pig war between the Americans and the English. The war allegedly over  pig actually disputed the boundary between Canada and the United States. It lasted front 1859 to 1871 with only one shot fired, the only casualty being the pig
We then moved onto to Lime Kiln lighthouse , famous for whale spotting and unfortunately just missed the 12pm whale. Alas we did not have time to wait for the 3pm whale.
Now back at the campsite I have scheduled early morning wake up call for 5 45 AM in order to catch the 8 05 ferry to Anacortes and cannot understand Nicola ' s unreasonable assumption that this is meant to be a holiday. What did she think she was letting herself in for!
